February 18, 2025, Needham, MA – The competition for active, long-only mandates is at an all-time high. Since
year-end 2018, net outflows from active mutual funds and ETFs totaled $1.7 trillion as of year-end 2024 versus
positive flows of nearly $4.4 trillion into passive products during the same period. Separately managed
accounts (SMAs) offer an opportunity for active managers. Based on findings from FUSE Research Network’s
Advisor Trend Monitor Series Report – Product Usage: The Advisor View, within the SMA space, surveyed
advisors reveal a 70%/30% SMA asset split between active and passive strategies compared to an advisor’s
overall book of business reflecting an active/passive split of around 60/40.
