iCapital’s system is expected to streamline the use of multiple alternatives within different distribution channels, said Jeff Strange, a relationship manager at FUSE Research. The alternative investment space has long lacked an industry standard that facilitates seamless processing like the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, known as DTCC, does for mutual funds, he added. “There’s individual contracts between the investor and the asset manager that still need a wet signature, something to sign,” he said. “It can take longer. What blockchain does is take some pain out of the system. It makes it more appealing for [advisors] to incorporate it into their normal activity. An advisor can have the same experience, regardless of which of the alts managers they’re investing with, if they’re going through [platforms] like an iCapital.”
