Both active and passive mutual funds experienced net outflows in 2020, but are making strides towards a comeback in 2021. While passive ETFs, the clear winners of 2020, account for roughly half (52%) of net YTD fund sales through March 31, 2021, active mutual funds comprise 27% and passive mutual funds comprise 13%. Despite moderate net flows (24% of total net flows) to active ETFs in 2020, active ETF assets only account for 1% of total fund AUM, through the first quarter of 2021.
